Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank'

Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Minister of Human Resource Development, started his career as a teacher at Saraswati Shishu Mandir. He did his post graduation from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. He is a recipient of “Bharat Gaurav Samman”, the highest literary honour of Mauritius.

On May 31, 2019 Shri Pokhriyal was appointed as the Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India. He represents the Haridwar Parliamentary constituency of Uttarakhand in the 17th Lok Sabha. He also represented the 16th Lok Sabha and was also a member in several Parliamentary Committees. He was a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for three-terms (1991-92 and 1993-2000). He was the Minister of Development of Uttaranchal (1997–98) and the Minister of Culture and Religion (1999–2000) in the Government of Uttar Pradesh. He has also been the Minister of several key departments in the Government of Uttarakhand during 2000-02 and later became the youngest Chief Minister of Uttarakhand during 2009-11.

Shri Pokhriyal is also a writer and has published several poems, novels and short stories, among other literary works. He has about 50 books (published) to his credit and several of this writings have been translated into English and many other Indian languages. Most of us fondly know him by his pen name `Nishank’.

Shri Nishank has been awarded in more than 12 countries for his literary achievements. His books have been translated into almost all Indians languages beside various foreign languages. In shri Nishank we find a rare combination of leading politician and renowned author.
